First Aid Training

Injuries and accidents occur on a daily basis and First aid saves lives. Professional medical staff can take several minutes to arrive at the scene of an accident and those minutes can be the difference between life and death.

A first aider’s responsibility is to render help as far as your scope of practice goes, and to stay with the injured until such a time that help arrives on the scene and you hand over to professional medical staff. The responsibility ends as soon as the injured is handed over to professional medical staff.

General Safety Regulation 3 of the Occupational Health and Safety act states that any employer who employs more than 10 employees must have trained first aiders available during all working hours at a rate of 1 trained first aider for every group of 50 employees for any workplace, and 1 trained first aider for every group of 100 in the case of an offices and shop.

The regulation don’t give us clarity on the level of training but it does state that you should have due consideration for the type of injuries employees are likely exposed to. Level 1 first aid course will be suitable for most workplaces. You may need to consider level 2 and 3 if the risks at your place of business is outside the scope of level 1 contents.
